Heroes of Might and Magic IV is an interesting turn-based strategy video game. Gus Smedstad developed this title and the 3DO Company for Microsoft Windows published it. This is the fourth installment of the popular Heroes of Might and Magic series. Moreover, it is the following part of Heroes of Might and Magic III and was the last developed by New World Computing. Metacritic determined this game with many generally favorable reviews and scored it 84 out of 100. "Heroes IV is clearly a worthy successor to the series and has very clearly been worth the wait" is what Gamespot said about this title. Not only that, Heroes of Might and Magic IV was a candidate for The Electric Playground's 2002 "Best Strategy Game for PC" award.

Heroes of Might and Magic IV showed various changes to the series. About the Heroes, not the same as the previous game, heroes in this game became present on the battlefield with their troops. They can attack the opponents and be attacked by them. If your hero is killed in battle, your hero must be brought to a sociable town to be revitalized. You can have armies with more than one hero, or with no heroes at all. The skill system also experiences an important overhaul, and all Heroes of a given class beginning the game with the same skills. Moreover, you have more control over the development of the Hero than in previous games in the series. A Hero can choose up to five of the nine available main skills, and each main skill makes three secondary skills. These 36 skills have five levels of progression as different from the three levels in the previous games.
About combat, both the adventure and combat maps were improved to a fixed-view isometric 3D showing. Non-hero spellcasting units were given right spell choices. Retaliation was allowed with the attack at the same time, and ranged units were given the ability to hit against ranged attacks.
About the world map, each crowd unit was given its movement on the adventure map, with units owning the ability to split off freely of the major army. However, the crowd can not as long as to be "shuttled" from hero to hero to drive an army-wide distances in a single turn.
About units, a small number of these skills are shared with former games, and some of the new skills can intensely affect strategy. Troop units may no longer be upgraded, and four recruitable ranks of units are released. Each rank includes two dwellings that can be created, but beyond the first rank, building one dwelling prevents the other.
